North Cascades Perspective

Mamiya 7 · Kentmere PAN 200

The plan was larches. For a few short weeks every October the alpine larches up near Harts Pass go gold, and I’d been meaning to make the drive up the North Cascades Highway to catch them. But a late start had the clock working against me from the first mile, and there was one stop I wasn’t willing to skip — the Lake Diablo Vista, where the water sits far below the road in a long bend between the peaks.

From there the road climbs to Washington Pass, and the granite spires around Liberty Bell pulled me over again. One more frame turned into a few more, the clouds kept rearranging themselves over the ridgelines, and somewhere in there the day got ahead of me — Harts Pass and its larches will have to wait for another trip. What I came home with instead is a roll of wide views through the Mamiya 7 and its 43mm: Kentmere PAN 200, souped in Xtol 1:1 for eight minutes, all big skies, dark timber and still water.
